I have been teaching literatures in English and critical theory at the Department of English, Dongguk University as assistant professor  (1991-1995), associate professor (1995-2000), university distinguished research professor (2016-), full professor (2000-2019), after I got his Ph. D. at the University of Missouri-Columbia. I am currently Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus at Dongguk University; and Jack Ma Chair Professor at College of International Studies (2019-2022), Chair Professor at College of International Education (2023-), Hangzhou Normal University, China; Visiting Professor at the Department of Film and Literature/Centre for Intermedial and Multimodal Studies, Linnaeus University, Sweden. I have served as Director and Dean of International Relations (2005-6), and Dean of College of the Humanities (2017-2019). I have been serving as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of English Language and Literature (2013-2021) and President of English Language and Literature Association of Korea (2012-13), President of Yeats Society of Korea (2000-2002), and President of Jacques Lacan and Contemporary Psychoanalysis Society of Korea (2008-2010). I was Visiting Professor at Cornell University (1998-1999) and Sapporo Gakuin University (2009) in Japan, and the Visiting Scholar (2007-8, 2015-6) and faculty affiliate of East Asia Center (2011-14) at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. I had served internationally as Vice President of IASIL(International Association of the Study of Irish Literatures, Headquarter in Ireland, 2009-2019) and IAELC(International Association of Ethical Literary Criticism, Headquarter in China, 2012-), and Executive Council Member of ICLA (International Comparative Literature Association, 2019-2025), Advisory Committee Member of Institute of World Literature of Harvard University (2013-16) and council members and editorial board members of many other international associations and society.

I have received major research grants from the Korea Research Foundation:  Transnationalism and Cultural Translation (2009-2011), Transnationalism and the Humanities (2014-2015), The Aesthetics of Trans Media, World Literature, and the Digital Humanities: Methodological Representations of Postmodern Sublime (2017-2020), The Ethics of Technology in the Humanities in the Age of Precarity and Pandemic: The Convergence of AI, Digital Humanities, Trans Media Art, and World Literature (2020-2021), The Aesthetics of Convergence and the Ethics of Critical Consilience of the AI Technology in the Humanities: Transduction of Memory and Cognition in the Feedback Loops of Trans Media, Digital Humanities, and World Literature (2021-2022), AI avec Digital Humanities: New Technopoetics and Electronic Literature (2022-2023).

I received the Minister of Education Order of Merit Award for Enhancement of the Humanities, Distinguished Research Award & Dongguk University Lifetime Award for Scholarly Achievement, The Newbridge Silver Literary Award for Scholarly Achievement in the field of Gerard Manley Hopkins Scholarship from the International Hopkins Society, and The Feeney Award of the International Hopkins Society, Distinguished Teaching Award from Dongguk University, Teaching Abroad Fellow from the Korea Research Foundation of Korea & The Ministry of Education, Korea, Department of Asian Studies Teaching Fellowship from Cornell University, The IASAIL-JAPAN (International Association of the Studies for the Anglo-Irish Literature-Japan) Fellow for Asian Scholars, and so forth.

I served as Advisory Council Member, Daesan Culture Foundation, South Korea, Non-Resident Program Manager at Directorate of the Humanities and Social Sciences, National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea, South Korea (CRB: Chief Review Board), Committee Member of Humanities Enhancement Project at National Research Foundation of Korea, South Korea, Organizing Committee Member of World Humanities Forum, UNESCO & MEST (Ministry of Education and Science and Technology), South Korea, and so forth.

My current interest is Yeats, Hopkins, Pound, Lacanian psychoanalysis, and modern and contemporary Irish, British and American poetry, transnationalism, cultural translation, world literature, digital humanities, AI and Big Data, and new techno humanities and consciousness. I wrote articles and books on modern and contemporary poetries in English, critical theory, psychoanalysis, comparative literature and world literature, Digital Humanities.
