Kalle Kananoja is a lecturer in history of science and ideas at the University of Oulu. His research interests include the cultural and social histories of slavery, medicine, and global health from the early modern period to the twentieth century. Kananoja’s published books include Healing Knowledge in Atlantic Africa (2021), and the co-edited volume Healers and Empires in Global History (2019). In Oulu, he teaches courses on historical ideas and theories of (Atlantic) slavery, tradition and modernity in medical history, and religious history. His current research focuses on Portuguese Inquisition in the southern Atlantic world; and healing, medical pluralism and the illegal practice of medicine in Finland from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
