As a literary scholar and critic, my main focus is on Tolkien and other major modern fantasists (in prose), but I’ve also delved into poetry as well. My anthology, Speculative Poetry and the Modern Alliterative Revivalas its name suggests, unveils the hitherto unsuspected revival of  the medieval alliterative meter.

My previous research has appeared in all the major journals for speculative fiction. I’ve won awards for teaching, the Mary Kay Bray Award from the SFRA, a R. D. Mullen Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from Science Fiction Studies, and I’m also the awards administrator for the Mythopoeic Society. I was also the reviews editor for Fafnir when it became the first academic journal to ever win a World Fantasy Award in 2020.
