    Abstract:
The thesis, John Steinbeck as an American Modernist, addresses the problematic literary placement of Steinbeck as a writer, and then identifies him as an American Modernist, which is often an overlooked category. Steinbeck's placement as an American Modernist is demonstrated through discussion of his early influences and analysis of his work.
