- Abstract:
- The current political arena in Nigeria is chaotic. After several months of the February 25th, 2023, presidential election, Nigerians are still not satisfied with the declaration of the controversial president Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The citizens are waiting eagerly for the court pronouncement on the case before it. They have no trust for the judiciary system that over the years has been marred by corrupt lawmakers. The fundamental role of the judiciary is to uphold the constitution and protect the rights of every single individual of a nation by integrating, constructing and applying laws in resolving disputes and checkmate any transgressions. Judiciary is often referred to as the last hope of a common man because it guarantees equal access to justice. However, these roles have been a subject of debate and questioning. The recent inconsistencies in adjudication by these law makers have really derailed the belief of the citizens in their judgement. It is against this background, the roles of the judiciary in the fight against corruption in Nigeria and the extent to which corruption has eaten deep into the judicial system is considered. The paper, therefore, concludes that to eradicate corruption in the judiciary, judicial independence with financial autonomy and transparency should be instituted.
