- For the 16th birthday of the hereditary prince Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach on 3 September 1773, his teacher Christoph Martin Wieland had the play "The Choice of Hercules", a "dramatic cantata", performed at the Weimar court theatre. Did Wieland thus connect to a tradition of the Hercules myth connected with the dynasty or the place "Weimar", or did he use the motif because its Europe-wide distribution made it a catchy and malleable material for his intended empire-wide impact? The article asks in which media and in which forms the Hercules motif had appeared in Weimar since the end of the Middle Ages, and how Weimar appropriated this European myth. Zum 16. Geburtstag des Erbprinzen Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach am 3. September 1773 ließ sein Lehrer Christoph Martin Wieland im Weimarer Hoftheater das Stück "Die Wahl des Herkules", eine »dramatische Cantate«, aufführen. Konnte Wieland damit an eine mit der Dynastie oder dem Ort »Weimar« verbundene Tradition des Herkules-Mythos anknüpfen, oder bediente er sich des Motivs, weil es sich seiner europaweiten Verbreitung wegen als ein eingängiger und formbarer Stoff für seine reichsweite Wirkungsabsicht anbot? Der Beitrag fragt danach, in welchen Medien und in welchen Formen das Herkules-Motiv in Weimar seit dem Ausgang des Mittelalters erscheint, und wie sich Weimar diesen europäischen Mythos aneignete.
