- Abstract:
- The Nallamala Forest Reserve and Amrabad Tiger Reserve in India have recently come under scrutiny due to the in-principle approval granted by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to the Department of Atomic Energy for uranium exploration and mining in the region. This study evaluates the impact of uranium mining on the Nallamala and Amrabad regions and examines whether the potential benefits of uranium extraction outweigh the environmental costs. The study finds that uranium mining in the region will lead to irreversible damage to the unique flora and fauna, loss of habitat for the Chenchu tribe, soil erosion, water pollution, and long-term health impacts due to radiation exposure. The study calls for re-evaluating the decision to allow uranium mining and the development of sustainable alternatives.
