- Abstract:
- Mark Young has written an important book on the centrality of the gospel for the future of theological education in evangelicalism in the United States. The book was published in January 2022 by Eerdmans. It contains three major sections, the first entitled ‘what matters,’ the second ‘past matters’ and the third ‘future matters.’ The book is well-laid out and is nicely written. It takes a unique approach to its subject matter by addressing five young individuals at the beginning of each new section. These individuals represent the wider demographic in the American theological education sector and include: Anna, a strategic and data-driven office worker; Brett, a white Ph.D. student who is also a faculty member; Sofia, a dynamic Pentecostal with Hispanic roots; Ellie, a young white woman who has multiple master’s degrees and is currently completing a Ph.D.; and Justin, an African-American who pastors a multi-racial congregation.
