- Abstract:
- The feasibility of treating the Hillcrest Educational Center (HEC) wastewater by a WWT system consisting of septic tank, dissolved air flotation-filtration (DAFF) and leaching field has been studied in three parts: (a) Technically the DAFF treats the HEC septic tank effluent well and removes 91-94% TSS, 40-76% COD, 60-65% BOD, 56-98% P, 84-91% odor, 74-91% color, 48-61% turbidity and 81-92% iron, from the septic tank effluent. DAFF effluent discharges to a leaching field for final polishing and disposal, so the groundwater source at HEC sit is protected; (b) Economically the innovative WWT system costs in the short term run are increased due to routine electricity consumption, sludge pumping from septic tank, chemical addition and O&M, compared to the low costs of a conventional septic tank-leaching field system. In a long term run the costs of the innovative WWT system installed are reduced compared to the conventional septic tank-leaching field system. The costs of conventional systems are extremely high when the leaching field is plugged and has to be replaced, and/or when the groundwater supply sources are contaminated, and has to be remediated or fined. So the innovative WWT system is cost-effective in a long term run; (c) Mechanically the moving parts, switches, pumps and electrical devices of DAFF clarifier require routine O&M to prevent any operational failure. The new Septic tank-DAFF-leaching field system is reliable, and good for decentralized waste treatment in rural area. A licensed operator is needed for the institutional WWTP operation.
