- Abstract:
- Staff and volunteers at the Thomas J. Watson Library, Metropolitan Museum of Art, assessed and expanded African American artist representation and visibility in their collection through bibliographic reviews for 700+ artists, identifying works for acquisition and enhancing catalog records with expanded content notes. Additionally, Watson launched an online index connecting researchers with records for those artists in Watson’s online catalog. This presentation examines the rationale, methodology, and outcomes of the African American Artists Project, and offers inspiration and tools to assist institutions with similar initiatives. Presented as part of the "Know Their Names: Case Studies in DEIA Collection Assessment, Expansion, and Access" panel.
