- Author's translation, corrected by a Japanese university lecturer, of the chapter “Discovering Japanese Fusion of Religions on the Pilgrimage Island of Shikoku” in A Passion for Japan: A Collection of Personal Narratives. この章では、日本に対するスティーブ・マッカーティの経歴をたどる。大学院で日本を専門に学んだ後、アジアの宗教の融合を発見するまでの数十年にわたる物語である。その過程で、著者は日本人の家族を得て、1993年に教授となった。四国を中心に、名古屋、大阪での日常生活が描かれている。多くの野球チームで活躍し、人気チームに参加することになった。日本語で日常生活を送ること、大学で教壇に立つこと、原典を研究することなどが、言語能力の向上と文化変容の動機づけとなった。著者は、言語教育や研究組織を率い、地元の先生方と四国の多言語ガイドブックを共同制作した。2004年に大阪に移住してからは、家族全員がそれぞれの道で成功した。JICAから招かれ、世界各国から訪れる公務員に定期的に日本を紹介するようになった。明らかに日本の言語、文化、人々に接触するすべてが私の反省を促すことに役立った。
