    Abstract:
Many artists are made to pay to table at festivals. Occasionally, a small percentage of the commission is even taken by the organizers. In November of 2021, a small press fest was organized that exercised a different model. At Colby College, we were extremely cognizant of the fact that this would be the first time such a festival would be held in the city of Waterville, Maine and we did not want to place any assumptions on the public attendance for the event, so we worked to compensate all participants, including vendors, workshop hosts, and speakers for their anticipated work. The event was founded on the idea of stimulating the local arts economy and encouraging conversations about creative labor and commerce as viable artistic practices. The objective for this festival was to bring attention to the local artists and provide them with a continuing platform to present, sell, and share their work. The lightning talk will address the structure of the event, the successes and failures, and how other institutions or libraries can model it in the future.
