    Abstract:
Diatopic and diachronic variation in Middle High German is rarely addressed explicitly in the new Mittelhochdeutsches Wörterbuch (MWB). The need to base the dictionary on edited texts makes it difficult for the lexicographical team to cover varietal specifics of MHG with certainty. This paper analyzes how variation is mentioned in the MWB and, based on examples of unpublished entries, discusses the problems and limits of covering MHG variation in the dictionary. A final section describes the public presentation of the digital archive of lemmatized references that is available at MWB Online, and outlines a project to enrich the list of primary sources with dialectal and temporal details about the texts. Although neither of the two are at the heart of the dictionary project, both promise to mitigate the scarcity of information on variation in the MWB.
