• Student perceptions of Twitter for informal learning: a case study

    Abstract:
    The use of the social networking site Twitter as a backchannel for conversation during both planned and unplanned activities and events is now almost routine in much of the world, including in higher education. This paper provides a small case study of student perceptions and use of Twitter for informal learning during a mixed mode undergraduate-level subject at a regional Australian University. Students were asked, but not required, to establish and post to Twitter accounts and several specific strategies were adopted by the teaching team to support student use of the platform. Students indicated several positive aspects to the use of Twitter as part of their learning in this subject, especially its role as a practical form of learning, but also express concern about Twitter being just another platform to monitor. This case study contributes to the evidence base about the use of Twitter in higher education.
