    Abstract:
This course explores key themes related to the archaeology of urbanism and urban centers in the ancient Mediterranean world. The development of urban culture in the Mediterranean world and western Asia will provide an opportunity to discuss cultural interactions and the development of the framework of urban culture in the ancient Near East, while examples drawn from other geographic spheres including Asia and the Americas will provide an opportunity to consider the essential elements and aspects of urbanism in the ancient world more broadly and to examine whether the process of urban development is a universal human experience or whether it is culturally circumscribed. An overarching theme of the course will be a contextualized consideration of urbanism as a process that leaves behind archaeological remains and that varies regionally (and sub-regionally). Another will be to consider “the city” and its place in archaeological discourse. The course will emphasize important theoretical issues, including consideration of urban identity and institutions, imperialism, architecture and status, city planning and urban morphology, economy, and production.
