    Abstract:
    The treadwheel was built in 1501 to haul the stone to the top of the tower for the building of the new spire. There are extensive entries in the churchwardens' accounts for its construction and use during the building of the spire which was completed in 1515. After this time it was retained for raising and lowering the church bells. St James' Church, Louth in Lincolnshire at 287' 6" is the tallest medieval parish church in the country.
