- Juan Latino was a professor of Latin at the University of Granada and is considered Europe's first Black poet. This poem appeared in a 1572 book by Juan Latino celebrating Spain's victory in the Battle of Lepanto (1571). This is a pedagogical unit that includes the original Latin text accompanied by a Spanish translation, with an English introduction, notes, and short bibliography by Elizabeth Wright.
