    Abstract:
    This paper is about an ongoing experiment in ecocriticism that trades the reference to oikos--the inhabited world--for a choreography ushering bodies that cannot exist together anymore as a public through their resurrection to collective existence at the hand of three-dimensional replicas of prehistoric caves: Chauvet II and Lascaux IV. What the replicas are made of and how they were made is well documented (within the limits of trademarked secrecy). What they bring into existence, that is, the space they open up, the boundaries they assign to the present, and the kind of future they were designed and built to keep at bay make for a more complicated story. My version of the story starts with a Cold War memory of life in a fallout shelter.
