• Hard Realities Softly Voiced or Watercolors on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

    Abstract:
    The "Landscape and Culture: Expedition Art of the Scottish Hebrides" exhibition depicts the dramatic backdrop for my two Art and Archaeology fieldwork seasons on the Isles of Vallay and North Uist, UK. Situated within the longstanding tradition of expedition art, the works document the endangered landscapes that had supported human habitation for thousands of years. Several of the paintings integrate fragmenting Scottish clan tartans into images of the depopulating ancestral islands to denote economic and climate pressures there. For this project, I collaborated with archaeologist, Rodrick B. MacLennan, and we received two Explorers Club Expedition Flag Awards, in 2015 and in 2017. Our research objective was to record the effects of climate change on endangered coastal archaeology sites on the two Scottish islands, to publish the results, and to provide implications for shoreline heritage worldwide. But don't be fooled, these softly voiced watercolors tell of hard realities, and they are quietly on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
