- Abstract:
- This paper is intended to be an approach to the festivities that take place mainly in Thrace and Macedonia, but also in other Greek geographical locations, during the dodecaimero and the three weeks of Carnival prior to Lent and during other important Christian days. Since ancient times, these festivals have maintained their origins in initiation and fertility rites from the past that did not disappear, but rather adapted to new times. These festivals have their origins in the Roman festivities of Lupercalia and the Dionysian, Orphic and Eleusinian mysteries, among others, while being a clear manifesto of the origin of theatre, as a satirical drama, which survives in its most primitive form. We intend, thus, to analyse the elements that are part of ancient rites and are maintained today in the traditions of modern Greece.
