    Abstract:
    This paper analyzes the 1774 Portugal Inquisition’s Regiment and its link with the cultural interventionism that marked the Pombalist reformism, whichstarted at the second halfof 18th century. These are allthe policiesthat influenced the public, social, cultural and religious institutions of Portugal and its colonies, based in a premisethat the backwardness,attributed to Portugal in comparison with European northern countries,wouldbesurpassed by reforms done vertically. Thereunto, it would benecessary the sustenance of some kind of institutions like the censorship and the Inquisition, as long as it was reformed and modernized, re-adapted to “enlighten” the mentalities, leading them to an enlightened order delimited by Catholic Christian ideals. The Regiment of de 1774, at the same time that it modernized the ways of punishmentwith the suppression of tortureandthe public penalties, like the autos-de-féand the publication of the penitenciado’s lists, has finished with the processual secret and,moreover,modified criminal categories, for example, suppressing“demonic possession” as a valid evidence for delicts like witchcraft. It was guided by an ideal of purity of faith, on the one hand, and, on another by a secularizing model, both contrarytoirreligion and religious forms that wereconsidered superstitious and fanatical. It will discuss the ambiguity of an inquisitorial regiment that has a dialogue, atsome points, with further enlightened debates about the application and characterizationof crimes and penalties, despite the enormous criticisms of the repression of religious differences being a fundamental topic of the Enlightenment
